Mr. Paul Manoma does not live in Japan. But he is no stranger to the land of the rising sun. Well, he is one of the Rising Stars, the Ghanaian national baseball team, that is. He was in Japan from September to November staying with the professional baseball organization Hiroshima Toyo Carp. They invited Paul to do a coaching/training   program. This interview took a whole day when he visited Tokyo just before he returned to Ghana.    

AJC : Paul san, let me ask you how everything went with the Hiroshima Carp.

Paul : I arrived on September 24th and spent 2 months with the Hiroshima Carp in Hiroshima. I learned everything from pitching methods, batting theory to conditioning, giving massage and stuff. You know how not to get injured and all that.

AJC : Sounds like you learned a lot. Did you have a translator ?

Paul : Yes, I had a translator, so he would explain everything in English.

AJC : Were you staying at the player dormitory ?

Paul : Yes. Mostly with the young minor league players. Some of them playing at major level like Nagakawa who was a couple of doors away from mine.

AJC : So you were staying with the Japanese players. Were you eating Japanese food with them?

Paul : Yeah I love Japanese food, I didn’t have any problem with it. Like these young Dominican players who were eating their food, but I ate Japanese food and loved it. 

AJC : OK, let me ask you about how you got here. I mean playing baseball in Ghana to travel all the way to the Japanese professional team… How did baseball start in Ghana ?

Paul : Back in 1986. I and my friends started it. Ghana was lucky because we had some scholarship programs with Cuba. So many of the Ghanaian boys and girls went to Cuba and studied in schools there and they learned baseball. When they came back from Cuba, they would all play baseball. Then Tomonari san got involved and everybody heard that there is baseball in Ghana, so many came. That is how we started the team and Yoshi san (Yoshihiko Takahashi, ex-Hiroshima player) came along.

AJC : When did Mr. Tomonari get involved?

Paul : 1992….I think. We were playing one day and he just saw us play. He came to the field and started talking to us. Then he became our coach.

Paul : I didn’t know who invited, but one day I heard that a Japanese professional baseball player was coming. to Ghana to teach us. So for that one week period, we stopped working and played everyday. But he came with the whole TV crew. It was actually later that I found out that Tomonari san was not involved. The media sent Yoshi san to Ghana to shoot a program, so they would show it to the Japanese. Yoshi san visited Ghana twice, the first time he stayed for a week. And later he came back for another week. He coached us very, very well. .At that point, we were taught by Tomonari san and we were at some level. Then Yoshi san came along and he took us to the higher level, gave us some skills.

It was all a part of the TV show, “Unbelievable”. Yoshi san came to Ghana, met us, shot the program and showed it in Japan. And they made it sound like Yoshi san brought baseball first in Ghana or at least taught us first, but there was Mr.Tomonari who came to Ghana and helped us before Yoshi san did. This was just a show for TV watchers, but what Tomonari san is doing is different.

AJC : Mr. Yoshihiko Takahashi played with Hiroshima, so there must be some connection that you were invited to Hiroshima this year.

Paul : When I arrived at Hiroshima, some of the players said they knew me because they saw me on this show “Unbelievable”. And they asked me questions about Yoshi san, how he became involved and all that.         

AJC : How many times have you been to Japan?

Paul : This has been my third trip to Japan. The first time was back in 2000. I was invited to Fukuoka Daiei Hawks. And the second time was in 2002. I took a tryout for the Anaheim Angels (MLB team), they were testing the Japanese players in Okinawa. And Mr. Yoshi invited me to Japan to give it a try. And that was a part of the TV show as well.

AJC : Now you are going back to Ghana. So what is the next step ? 

Paul : Well, I will teach young baseball players in Ghana. The next Olympic in 2008, the Africa continent will have 2 countries going to Beijing instead of 1. Now the south Africa is going down a bit, we have a good chance to win. But I like to come back to Japan next year, because I spent 2 months this time and it is not enough. Someday we like to have a baseball academy just like the Dominican academy the Carp has in Dominican republic. So I'm doing whatever I can to make things happen.....


ポール・マノマ氏は日本在住ではありません。しかしガーナで野球を始め、日本人コーチと出会い、すっかり日本という国が第二の故郷になってしまいました。今年、彼は広島東洋カープの招きで2ヶ月間、チームの施設でコーチ研修を行い、ガーナに帰国。このインタビューは2004年11月の末、彼が研修を終え、帰国する2日前に収録されました。

AJC：　ポールさん、広島カープの研修はいかがでしたか？

ポール：　9月24日に来日し、2ヶ月間を広島でカープと共に過ごしました。ピッチング・メソッド、バッティング理論、そしてコンディションの整え方、例えば怪我をしない体を作るためのマッサージとか、あらゆることを学びましたよ。

AJC：　いろいろ多くの事を学んだんですね。通訳の方はいたんですか？

ポール：　はい、通訳の方がついてくれて終始、英語で説明を受けました。

AJC：　選手の寮に宿泊されていたんですか？

ポール：　そうです。大体は2軍の若い選手と一緒にね。でも中には1軍で活躍している選手もいましたよ。永川投手とか、すぐそばの部屋でした。

AJC：　日本の選手たちと一緒に寝泊りしたんですね。食べ物は日本食を食べていたんですか？

ポール：　もちろん。日本食は大好きですよ。他にもドミニカの若い選手がいたんですが、彼らはお国の食事を作ってもらってましたね。でも私は他の選手たちと一緒に日本食を食べました。全く問題はなかったです。

AJC：　そうですか。それではあなたがここにいたるまでの、道のりについておうかがいします。つまりガーナで野球を始めて、来日してプロ野球チームと交流を持つにいたった、その過程です。ガーナに於いて野球はいつごろ、どのようにして始まったんですか？

ポール：　1986年でしたね。まず私と友人たちが始めたんです。ガーナはまだ幸運だったんですよ。キューバとの交換留学が盛んでしてね。多くの少年少女がキューバに招かれ、向こうの学校で勉強したんです。そして野球も覚えました。キューバから戻ってくるとみんなが野球をやるんです。それから友成さん（注：JICA職員・ガーナナショナルチーム初代監督）が関与され、ガーナで野球が行われていると聞いて、次第にみんなが興味を持ってやって来るようになったんです。そして我々はナショナル・チームを結成し、ヨシさん（高橋慶彦・元広島カープ）が訪れてきたんです。

AJC：　友成さんはいつ頃から関与されるようになったんですか？

ポール：　1992年だったと思います。我々が野球をやっていると、通りがかった彼が私たちに声をかけてくれたんです。そして彼は我々のコーチになってくれたというわけです。

AJC：　そうだったんですか。友成さんはあなた方ガーナ人に野球を教えたわけですね。それから元プロ野球選手がやってきた。どういう経過でそのような運びになったんでしょうか？

ポール：　誰が招いたのか、私は全く知りませんでした。しかしある日、日本から元プロ野球選手が我々のコーチにやってくると聞いたのです。我々は仕事を1週間しないで野球漬けの日々を過ごしました。だけどそれはテレビの取材だったんです。後で知った事ですが、友成さんは関与していなかったんですね。日本のテレビ局がヨシさんを派遣し、プログラムの一部としてその一部始終を収録し、日本で放映した・・・そういう事だったんです。ヨシさんは2度、ガーナを訪れました。1週間ずつね。彼は素晴らしい事をたくさん教えてくれましたよ。それ以前、我々は友成さんの元で野球を学びました。そしてある程度のレベルに達することができた。さらにヨシさんが来てくれたおかげで、我々はより高いレベルに達することができたんです。

「アンビリーバボー」という テレビ番組でしたが、ヨシさんがガーナにやってきて我々と出会い、そしてその模様が日本で放映されました。まるでヨシさんが初めてガーナで野球を広めた、あるいは教えた、みたいな紹介をされたけど、その前に友成さんが野球を教えてくれたんです。あれはただのお茶の間向けのテレビ番組でした。でも友成さんがおこなっている活動は違うんです。

AJC：　高橋慶彦氏は広島カープの選手でした。今年あなたがカープに招かれたのも何らかの関係があるのではないでしょうか？

ポール：　広島カープの施設に着いた時、すでに何人かの選手は私のことを知ってましたね。「アンビリーバボー」を見て覚えてくれていたんです。そして彼らはヨシさんについても色々聞いてきました。どうして彼がガーナに来ることになったのか、などね。

AJC：　今回の来日で日本は何回目ですか？

ポール：　3度目です。最初は2000年、その時は福岡ダイエー・ホークスにお世話になりました。2度目は2002年、（アメリカ大リーグの）アナハイム・エンジェルスの入団テストを受けたんです。沖縄で日本人向けのトライアウトを実施していたんですが、ヨシさんが私を招待してくれたんです。それもテレビ番組の一端でした。

AJC：　これからガーナに帰国されるわけですが、次のステップは何でしょうか？

ポール：　帰ってガーナの若い野球選手達に教えます。次回2008年のオリンピックでは、アフリカ大陸から2チームが北京へと進めます。（現在アフリカ最強の）南アフリカが弱体化しているようなので、ガーナにも十分チャンスがあると思います。だけど私は来年も日本に戻ってきたいですね。今回2ヶ月の研修でしたが、まだまだ足りないんです。いつか、広島カープが開いたドミニカ・アカデミーのようにガーナにもアカデミーを作ってもらいたいですね。そのためにも頑張りますよ。
