| Mr. Samy Pop is enjoying a success of celebrity in Japan. I'm sure you have seen his face somewhere before. Here is a recent interview done in November 2004. I might add that the interview was carried out in Japanese language, thanks to his excellent abilities. |
| AJC: Mr. Pop, let me start the conversation with this basic question, where
are you from and why did you come to Japan?
AJC: When was it? Pop: About 15 years ago…What Heisei year is this? AJC: This is Heisei 16th. Pop: Yes, I arrived in the first year of Heisei. So it’s been 16 years….it’s way too long. I studied as a student for the first 2 years, then I started doing the current job. AJC: How did you learn the Japanese? Pop: I went to school for 2 years. AJC: Did you know Japanese before you came here? Pop: No, not at all. AJC: Was it difficult for you to learn Japanese? Pop: Yes, it was quite difficult at the beginning. And then I started watching cartoons like Doraemon…it was useful and fun at the same time. AJC: Doraemon! That’s interesting. But when you started watching cartoons and that kind of subculture stuff in Japan, did you feel strange? And did you get accustomed to Japan quickly? Pop: Yes, I thought it was quite interesting. But for living in Japan, at first I had difficulty to get used to the size of small housing. I’m used to it now though. AJC: I hear the tall foreigners have many painful experiences bumping their head here and there inside their house. How tall are you? Pop: 195 centimeters AJC: Wow..you’re quite tall. Nowadays the Japanese got taller than the generation before, but still there are not too many people that tall. Pop: Well there are many (in Ghana). |

Pop: But it is different in Ghana. I feel that the Japanese women will be better if they keep their feminine side after having children. Oh well, my wife is going to get mad at me on a comment like this (laugh). She will say "don’t be kidding, you must be dreaming…" AJC: (laugh) So your wife is pretty strict. Pop: Very strict. But she is doing so much for everything… AJC: So what is your goal, Mr. Pop? Pop: About my career….I want to work hard and someday to be the cultural bridge between Ghana and Japan. I’d like to bring some job to Ghana as well. AJC: And about your career, you are in the entertainment world of Japan appearing on TV and movies. What made you get involved in that business? Pop: Well…it was about 14 years ago. I love Karaoke and at that time I was working as a pat timer at a restaurant in Harajuku. And one of my colleagues came up to me and asked “You like Karaoke, right?” And I said yeah I love Karaoke. He asked me if I was interested in singing for this show on TV. I loved the idea. So I applied, passed the audition and moved on to win the contest at the karaoke show. Then the management office that I work now had interest in me… AJC: So it was music that made you become an entertainer, a turning point of your life. What kind of music do you listen to? Pop: Anything from enka to black contemporary. AJC: What kind of music is popular in Ghana? Pop: Right now…Hip-life is hot. Hip-life is…hip from hip-hop, then we call the popular music high-life, so the mixture of the words, we call it hip-life. It’s kind of like rap. AJC: Do they sing those songs in English in your country? Pop: English and the Ghanaian language. I would like to invite those celebrities to Japan someday too. AJC: That would be wonderful. AJC：ポップさんの出身国はどちらでしょうか？どういうきっかけで日本に来られたのですか？ ポップ：出身国はガーナです。きっかけは・・・・実はお姉さんの旦那さんが日本人なんです。だからみんなでガーナに住んでたんですが、お姉さんの家族が日本に行くことになった。それで私もしばらくして日本に招かれたんです。 AJC：それはいつ頃の事ですか？ ポップ：もう15年くらい前・・・今年は平成何年ですか？ AJC：今年は平成16年になります。 ポップ：そう、平成元年に来たんですよ。だからもう16年です。長すぎるなあ・・・・そして初めの2年間ほど勉強をして、それから今の仕事をするようになった。 AJC：日本語はどのようにして勉強したんですか？ ポップ：最初に2年間、学校に行って勉強しました。 AJC：全く日本語の知識がないまま来日したんですか？ ポップ：ええ、最初は全然日本語、話せなかった。 AJC：日本語の勉強は難しかったですか？ ポップ：最初は難しいと思いましたね。でもアニメの「ドラエもん」とかを見て・・・漫画も役に立ちました。 AJC：なるほど。それはいい勉強の方法ですね。でもそういったアニメも含めて日本の文化に触れ、最初はどのように感じましたか？奇妙に映りましたか？また日本の生活にはすぐに慣れましたか？ ポップ：いや、面白いと思いましたね。でも生活面で言えば初めの頃は部屋がちっちゃくて苦労したな。今は慣れたけど。 AJC：そうでしょうね。よく外国人の方は家の中を歩いていても頭をぶつけるって聞きますよ。身長はどのくらいですか？ ポップ：195センチ。 AJC：わ、それは大きいですね。今でこそ日本人もけっこう背が高くなってきたけど、昔はみんな小さかった。でも195センチある人は今も少ないです。 ポップ：（ガーナには）いっぱいいますよ（笑）。 AJC：日本の食事はどうでしょう？ ポップ：好きですよ。納豆とか、何でも。日本食大好きです。 AJC：じゃあ普段も家族の方と一緒に、全く普通の日本食を食べてるんですね。お子さんもいらっしゃるんでしたね。 ポップ：そう、子供も2人いますよ。みんなで毎日、日本食です。 AJC：日本人女性の印象について何か聞かせてください。 ポップ：日本人の女性は可愛いですよ。ちっちゃくて全体もコンパクトで、可愛いと思う。多くの日本人女性は・・・まあ人にもよると思うけど、結婚した後もがんばって旦那さんを守ろうとします。男性を立ててくれてね。そういう人が多い。でも日本人女性は子供ができると、お母さんになっちゃいますね。女を捨ててしまうって言うか。そこガーナの女性とは違います。 AJC：なるほど。確かにそうかもしれません。子供ができると子供に愛情が移っちゃう、みたいな・・・ ポップ：でもガーナは違うんですよ。だから子供ができても、女のままでいて欲しいなって思います。こんなこと言ってたら怒られちゃうけど（笑）。甘ったれてそんなこと言ってる場合じゃないわよって、言われちゃうな。 AJC：（笑）ポップさんの奥さんは厳しいんですね。 ポップ：厳しい、厳しい。でもちゃんとがんばってる。 AJC：それではポップさんの目標って、どういうものですか？ ポップ：仕事に関しては・・・日本でがんばって将来、ガーナと日本の架け橋になればいいなって思っています。ガーナにも仕事を持っていったり・・・。 AJC：そうですか。それでは今のお仕事について。ポップさんは芸能界で活躍されているわけですが、そういった世界で仕事を始められたきっかけって何だったんですか？ ポップ：きっかけは・・・今から約14年前かな。僕はカラオケが大好きでね。その頃、原宿にあるレストランでバイトしてたんです。で、そのバイトの同僚が「お前カラオケ好きだろう」って言ってきたんですよ。テレビで外国人カラオケ大会があるからそれに出てみないかって。僕はもう出たい、出たいって言って。それで申し込んでオーディションに行って受かって・・そしてそのカラオケ大会で優勝したんです。それで声がかかって今の事務所に入ったんですね。 AJC：歌がきっかけですか。じゃあポップさんは音楽好きなんですね。普段はどういう音楽を聴くんですか？ ポップ：ジャンルは決まってないですね。いい音楽なら何でも。演歌だろうがブラックだろうが。 AJC：ガーナではどういう音楽がはやってるんですか？ ポップ：今はヒップライフっていうのが、はやってます。ヒップライフっていうのは・・・ヒップホップのヒップ、それとガーナではポップスのことをハイライフって言うんですが、それであわせてヒップライフ。ラップみたいな音楽です。 AJC：そういったヒット曲は英語で歌われるんですか？ ポップ：英語と、あとガーナ語でも。いつかそうしたガーナの有名人も、日本に招こうかなっていう考えも持ってます。 AJC：そうですか。色々活動の幅も広がりますね。これからもご活躍を期待してます。がんばってください。 ポップ：ありがとうございます。 |
